On June 7, 1955, Douglas formally announced its intention to develop a jet powered successor to the DC-7. The first DC-8-10 was rolled out on April 9, 1958. First flight took place on May 30, 1958.


TYPE

    Four-turbofan, medium/long-range commercial transport.

The DC-8 was the first Douglas Commercial jet, first launch order from Pan Am Oct 
13 1955. 142 were on order by the time the prototype made its first flight.Delta 
flew the first revenue service on 18 sep 1959.  556 DC-8's were producedending 
in may 1972.  263 series 60 were made, 110 of them were converted to series 70 by 
1986.

VARIANTS

    DC-8-10     : Basic US-domestic version. Initial version. Medium range domestic routes.
                  First flew May 30 1958.
    DC-8-20     : Hot-and-high version of the -10. More powerful turbojets. 
                  Enhanced takeoff performance. First flown 29 nov 1958
    DC-8-30     : Intercontinental version with increased fuel. Long range JT4A engines.
                  First flew Feb 21 1950. Extended wing tips
    DC-8-40     : As DC-8-30, but powered by long range Rolls-Royce Conway bypass turbojets. 
                  First flown 23 jul 1959.
    DC-8-50     : Powered by Pratt & Whitney JT-3d turbofans. 
                  First flight December 20, 1960. -51 is the domestic version, 
                  -52/-53/-55 intercontinental versions, differing in have different
                  powerplants. Six -10 and four -30 were brought up to -50 standards.
    DC-8-50CF   : Convertible passenger/cargo aircraft with 3.56 x 2.16 m (140 x 85 in) 
                  upward-hinged cargo door on the left side of the forward fuselage and 
                  reinforced floor. In 1975 some -30's, -40's, and -50's no longer 
                  needed for passenger service were brought up to -50CF standard.
    DC-8-50AF   : All-Freighter version, without windows and passenger amenities. 
    DC-8-55     : Cargo model,side loading freight door & reinforced floor.        
                  First flew  298 oct 1962.
    DC-8-61     : Long-range US-domestic version. Fuselage stretch of 11.18 m 
                  (36 ft 8 in). First flight March 14, 1966. 
    DC-8-61CF   : Convertible passenger/cargo version. 
    DC-8-62     : Aerodynamically improved intercontinental version, based on the 
                  DC-8-55. The H (Heavier) suffix indicates higher MTOW.
                  First Flight 29 aug 1963, extended fuselage but less (6ft 8in)than in srs 61,
                  increase of wing span. 
    DC-8-62AF   : All-Freighter version, without windows and passenger amenities. 
    DC-8-62CF   : Convertible passenger/cargo version. 
    DC-8-63     : Intercontinental version. Fuselage of 61 and powerplants of 62.
                  First Flight10 Apr 1967 aerodynamic improvements.
    DC-8-63AF   : All-Freighter version, without windows and passenger amenities. 
    DC-8-63CF   : Convertible passenger/cargo version. 
    DC-8-63PF   : All-passenger version with reinforcements of -63AF, -63CF.
